CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY -
Okay, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have worked together a lot of times. "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Sleepy Hollow," and this Fall's upcoming "Corpse Bride." All of these have gained somewhat of a cult following. Well, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is the first one I think aimed at children. Burton's stuff is usually a little too dark for the kiddies. Well, surprise, "Charlie" is dark too but for some reason the kids are loving it. I thought the movie was amazing. Visually, it was stunning. Depp is hilarious and yet subtly creepy. The kid actors are amazing. Freddie Highmore, who plays Charlie, was awesome in "Finding Neverland" (also with Depp) and continues to impress in this film as well. This is a way funny movie with lots of cool one-liners and is visually amazing as well. Just a fun ride. But don't bring the kids, they'd probably get freeked. I'm a little scared. And Depp kinda reminded me of Michael Jackson. Just me. OVERALL GRADE: A

I just watched this today and I got the Jackson vibe too. It threw off the whole movie for me. I didn't like the oompa loompas. I really didn't like the movie. There were some great one liners but a script alone does not make a movie good. I really don't think that it was better than the original. I also didn't think that the squirel movements were natural looking. I have watched those little things for hours and they don't move like that. Charlie was good though. Enjoy.July 23 2005, 16:20:02 UTC 6 years ago
This version fits the book a lot better...because Roald Dahl was one crazy guy too!
